City to widen 10th Street from Hwy. 63 to Spring Avenue
The City of Rolla Street Department willbegin a project to widen 10th Street from Hwy. 63 to Spring Avenue onMonday, July 23 at 7 a.m. Thefirst phase of the project will include the excavation of the curb andsidewalk. After the new curb and sidewalk are poured, a two-inch mill andoverlay of asphalt will be applied to this portion of 10thStreet. This project will also resultin the construction of an additional right turn lane onto Hwy. 63 that willgreatly improve traffic flow and safety at this busy intersection. Cautionsigns will be posted in the construction area, indicating that this is a workzone, and for motorists to please drive carefully. Elm Street in downtown Rolla.). The County Hills development is asingle-family housing project, being proposed by the Springfield based developer,Housing Plus, LLC. The project consists of 34 single-family homes, withapproximately 1,350-square-feet of living space. The development has receivedbroad support in Rolla and was given a strong endorsement by the MissouriHousing Development Commission (MHDC), last year when the City first appliedfor funding through MHDC for this project. The Country Hills Development project isdesigned to fill a much-needed gap in available affordable single-family homesin Rolla. RollaMayor Bill Jenks, III was presented the Edwin Dalstrom Distinguished ServiceAward by Rolla PD Captain Jason Smith (pictured right), past president of the Rolla Lions Club, atthe Rolla City Council meeting on July 17. Theaward, which is named for the Mid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service’s firstpresident, Edwin Dalstrom, is the highest honor that a Lions Club can bestowthrough the organization. Lions Clubs can honor a club member or a member oftheir community with this prestigious award by making a $1,000 contribution toMid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service. The Dalstrom award is awarded to aclub or community member who has demonstrated exceptional humanitarian serviceto the community. The award can be received only once. “Mayor Jenks has been described by many in the area as Rolla's biggest cheerleader,”said Capt. Smith. “It is very common to see him out in the communityvolunteering at various events and he is always recognizing others for all of theirhard work in our community. A violation of the requirements of thisOrdinance shall constitute an offense which could be punishable by a fine notto exceed $50. Denbury Onshore, LLC, Fined a Third Time for Violating the Clean Water Act
(DALLAS – September 20, 2012) The Environmental Protection Agency has fined Denbury Onshore, LLC, of Alvin, Texas, $16,600 for violating the federal Clean Water Act.
On April 4, 2012, the EPA inspected the company’s Central Treating Station oil storage facility in Montgomery County, Texas, and found that the company had failed to develop and implement a Facility Response Plan (FRP) as required by federal regulations. The Clean Water Act requires oil storage facilities that have a storage capacity of one-million gallons or more to develop and implement an FRP to demonstrate a facility’s preparedness to respond to a worst case oil discharge. The facility’s drainage area travels to Crystal Creek, a tributary of the San Jacinto River, and the facility has a storage capacity of over three million gallons.
In July 2011, the company was fined $13,905 for a 7,560-gallon oil spill into Crystal Creek and $19,927 for a 14,700-gallon oil spill in July 2012.
The Clean Water Act prohibits the discharge of oil or a hazardous substance into or upon the navigable waters of the United States or adjoining shorelines in such quantities that have been determined may be harmful to public health. The EPA is charged with enforcing the Act and ensuring that human health and the environment are protected from harmful impacts of these violations.

Bay Area Agency Recipient of U.S. EPA Clean Air Excellence Award

Metro. Transportation Commission recognized for transportation efficiency innovations
SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency yesterday honored the Metropolitan Transportation Commission of the San Francisco Bay Area with a 12th annual Clean Air Excellence Award for work conducted by its Climate Initiatives Program to reduce transportation emissions and vehicle miles. Through the commission’s inaugural program, conducted in partnership with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, $33 million in grants were distributed for 17 test projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. These transportation-focused projects range from creating the Bay Area’s first bicycle sharing program to facilitating an electric taxi pilot program in San Francisco and San Jose. “For over 40 years, the Clean Air Act’s goals have been met through commitment and creativity,” said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. “Through their innovative solutions to improve air quality, this year’s award winners are benefiting public health, communities and our economy.” The Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s award was one of 11 given to projects and companies nationwide for work on clean air initiatives. The Clean Air Excellence Award recognizes innovative programs that protect Americans’ health and the environment, educate the public, serve their communities and stimulate the economy.
